The Governess' Room
The earliest occupant of this room could have been called Miss Harper and like
most of her peers, she was neither in one world nor the other.
In a house with several servants, she was inevitably a source of friction.
In her desire to preserve her status and self-respect, she would often have eaten
her meals in odd corners rather than with the 'domestics'.
Her duties combined education in a broad sense, and child minding. Often
her counterparts would have been from France or Germany, eager to learn English as
well as earn a living. A formidable disciplinarian!
